Brief History and Role

IAAO has been in continuous operation as a private non-profit corporation since 1934 providing education, standards and professional designations to persons involved in the assessment and taxation of property.

Principal Activities

Classroom, online and self-study education services are provided to over 6,000 students annually.

Professional designations recognize a high level of education and expertise in areas of valuation and assessment administration.

Technical assistance is provided to local jurisdictions on an ad hoc, as needed basis.

Brief Areas of Policy

IAAO is governed by bylaws and procedural rules. In addition, standards have been developed in most areas of valuation and assessment administration, some of which have been codified by local jurisdictions.

Organisation

IAAO is governed by a fourteen (14) member board of directors that are elected by the membership.

Membership

IAAO serves property assessment professionals worldwide from government jurisdictions and agencies as well as various business and academic communities. Our members represent a wide range of locations and areas of expertise, part of what makes IAAO the internationally recognized leader for mass appraisal standards.

Publications

In addition to the material that supports our educational offerings, IAAO publishes a magazine called Fair + Equitable, a scholarly journal called The Journal of Property Tax Assessment and Administration and several text and reference books.
