Brief History and Role
The Central Association of Agricultural Valuers (CAAV) was founded in 1910 to present, qualify and brief agricultural valuers. Its members act and advise all those involved in agricultural and rural property matters, whether owners tenants, landlords, public bodies, conservation organisations or otherwise, with work from estate management to livestock markets, compulsory purchase to taxation valuations, farm business structures to diversification, and many other professional specialities.
It plays a leading role in discussions with government on proposed legislative changes, publishes technical papers on valuation topics and supports best professional practice.
Principal Activities
Members' services. The CAAV offers a recognised specialist professional qualification for those with rural expertise. Members are briefed though a News Letter, technical publications and a website. With an annual national conference, there are also other conferences as required and the 29 local associations hold a range of meetings to suit their members.
Representation. The CAAV plays a leading role in discussions with government on proposed legislative and administrative changes.
Examinations. The CAAV holds annual two day examinations for the qualification FAAV, supported by a programme of tutorials.
Principal Areas of Policy
Members are concerned with the valuation (and all aspects relating to that) of agricultural and rural land and assets together with advice and management, including those needed for:
* lending and sale
* tenancies
* farm business structures
* taxation
* compulsory purchase
* conservation issues
* diversification
Organisation
The association is governed by its Council, mostly representing local associations, with detailed work delegated to administrative and technical committees (Valuation and Compensation, Property, Farming and Business, Environment and Land Use) and working parties, supported by the Secretary and Adviser, as well as committees for each of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
